FOR PARENTS:
GiliGilis introduces young children to the rhythmic and melodic fundamentals of music using the Orff Approach. Colorful creatures in an entertaining environment demonstrate a variety of rhythmic and melodic patterns using repetition to familiarize viewers with basic music patterns, traditional nursery rhymes and children’s songs. The colorful and amusing situations in which melodic and rhythmic patters are presented invite young viewers to join in – to sing and clap along, introducing the idea that music should be a fun and natural activity.
- Watch the show with your child, talk about what you have seen, and encourage participation by humming, singing, and/or clapping along with the GiliGilis.
- Encourage your child to create his or her own rhythmic patterns by clapping or otherwise “keeping time” to any music.
- Challenge your child to set a favorite nursery rhyme to music (e.g., make a song out of “Humpty-Dumpty”).
- Select a nursery rhyme your child knows well, then ask her to sing it to express different emotions (e.g., How would “Hickory Dickory Dock” sound if the mouse was happy? Sad? Nervous?).
